WOW! I'm on a roll today! 2 new articles!! WHOO HOO!!! Yet, it was only from pure inspiration and brain kicking from Doc Jensen that this is possible. :) As you've no doubt surmised...ahh..most of you know about the new film to the station named The Orchid. Well, in this film Marvin Candle...halliwax(whatever his name is) is wearing a Swan station jacket. The Doc says it could be because it is more or less..well... you read the article.Here's whatado- These films are bogus. They were made to mislead. They were made to create an illusion. I say the illusion was put forth so someone could study the island's much deeper secrets, to study the supernatural. More so, it's an easy way to get money funded to you by creating an illusion that there is some important scientific work going on and really it isn't scientific, more supernatural. PLUS this illusion will keep it secret, keep it safe.
I am saying that I think this man is a fake and knows it or maybe a fake and doesn't know it. I am going with the first choice. He is a phony. I mean a man can only have so many names!!!
Like I said....I think that someone wanted to get money handed to them while keeping the island's secrets all to themselves. That's what I think.

CF, I agree there's definitely something fishy about the various station videos. For example, we know the Pearl video was an out and out lie.
How far in the chain of things do you think the lies go? For example, did Hanso fund the De Groots and their hippy dippy types because he wanted to place his own people on the Island to find the real thing he was looking for, whatever that is. Or is it the case that the De Groots were lying to Hanso and their people? It would seem that the De Groots (or whatever group of people designed the station concept) would have to know that they were creating mis-leading if not downright deceptive videos. So are the De Groots the liars? Does Hanso know? Or is it farther down the chain and one of the worker bees stumbled on something and went to work on this Purge idea with the Hostiles and Ben?
Layers of lies and liars. I'm guessing that's what we're in for.
Well Memphish, Do you know Donavan from Desmond's Flashes Before Your Eyes? Was he a DeGroot? I mean it would almost fit perfectly because he seemed to almost believe Desmond about him going back in time, yet he wanted to persuade him otherwise. If he was a DeGroot, it would all make sense.
We may even find that the DeGroots are the initial liars, but there is someone fooling them as well.

It sure is a valid point here! I mean, what organization doesn't do "positive" propaganda for a variety of reasons?! I can see the DI showing possible recruits propaganda films to get them to sign up, the result being Roger's surprise at his crummy job and saying that he didn't sign up for that. Not that the DI would show anything secret, there would be varying degrees of revelation in certain films of course, depending on the audience's level of commitment at viewing.
Parts of the Swan film seem real though, Candle almost seems to shudder as he mentions The Incident. But other elements of the Swan film could still be very misleading or deceptive.

Donavan DeGroot? That has a nice ring to it. My suspicions about this were high also. Along the lines of "layers of liars" I also think that if the past could have been changed, I don't think it was Desmond who changed it. Someone came onto the island and changed the events so that Desmond would push the button and a chain of events would occur. Ahh, maybe the chain of events all started when the plane crashed. (thats my guess.) People involved could be:

Isn't Donovan the singer with the song about Atlantis? Maybe that's a clue too.
There are a few other pertinent (i.e. similar to other LOST reference) Donovan's in world history as well:
Charles Donovan MD (1863-1951): an Irish naturalist, who discovered the causes of various diseases.
Edward Donovan (1768 - 1837:) an Anglo Irish writer, traveller and amateur zoologist.
Mike Donovan: fictional character from Isaac Asimov's Robot short stories who is a robotics engineer for remote applications such as planets and space stations.
